Umrah Rituals - Shaving or Trimming

Shaving or Trimming the Hair
After completing the ritual of Sa’i, one of the final steps for male pilgrims is to either shave their heads or trim their hair, signifying a physical and spiritual renewal. This is a significant moment during the pilgrimage, as it marks the end of the pilgrimage and the pilgrim's exit from the state of Ihram.

Shaving the Head (for Men)
Shaving the head is a Sunnah for male pilgrims, symbolizing humility, purification, and submission to Allah. It serves as a sign of renewal—a physical representation of shedding past sins and starting afresh.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“O Allah, forgive those who shave their heads.”
The companions asked, “And those who trim?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied, “O Allah, forgive those who shave their heads.” They asked again, “And those who trim?” He replied, “And those who trim.”
(Sahih Muslim 1303)

This tradition signifies the pilgrim’s complete submission to the will of Allah.
Note: Shaving the head is an act of purification and spiritual renewal. It is recommended to have the head shaved by a professional barber, and it should be done after completing the Sa’i and not before.
Trimming Hair (for Women)
Women, on the other hand, do not shave their heads. Instead, they cut approximately 1–2 cm from the ends of their hair.
This symbolizes a sense of humility and renewal, marking their spiritual transformation after completing the pilgrimage rituals.
While the trimming is less significant than shaving the head for men, it still holds deep spiritual meaning and signifies a return to a state of purity after performing the rites of Umrah.

Completion of Umrah
After shaving or trimming the hair, pilgrims have officially completed the Umrah, exiting the state of Ihram. This marks the pilgrim’s spiritual cleansing and signifies that they are now allowed to return to their normal activities, free from the restrictions of Ihram.
This moment of completion is often filled with gratitude and thankfulness for the opportunity to perform the sacred rituals, and many pilgrims use this time to pray for forgiveness, blessings, and peace for themselves and their loved ones.

General Conduct in the Haram
While in the Haram, the sanctity of the place must always be respected. Pilgrims are encouraged to maintain the highest standard of behavior, demonstrating patience, respect, and mindfulness in their actions.

1. Avoiding Harmful Actions
Pilgrims are reminded to avoid jostling or engaging in actions that might harm others during the rituals. The sacredness of the Haram requires pilgrims to maintain a calm and respectful demeanor at all times.
Avoiding disputes, harsh behavior, and disturbing others ensures that the sanctity of the place remains intact. Pilgrims are expected to be gentle, patient, and considerate in all their interactions.

2. Following Guidance
Pilgrims should follow the instructions of the security personnel and guides who are responsible for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all visitors. These personnel are well-trained to help with the flow of large crowds and to provide guidance regarding the rituals.
It is important to remain patient and obedient to these instructions, as they are in place to ensure everyone can complete the pilgrimage safely and with ease.

3. Respecting the Sanctity of the Haram
The Haram is a sacred place, and pilgrims must show the utmost respect for its sanctity. This includes maintaining cleanliness, refraining from loud or offensive behavior, and praying quietly.
Pilgrims are reminded that Allah's house is a place of worship, not for worldly distractions. Focus should remain on performing the rituals with humility and devotion.

Final Thought
